Covo dei Caruggi was born in the heart of Genoa's historic centre, in the ancient area of Ponte Legna, where for centuries merchants, sailors, pilgrims and travellers from every corner of the Mediterranean and beyond crossed paths. Today these same spaces welcome those who wish to discover an authentic city, far from the conventional routes.

The six rooms are not simply rooms, but stories to be lived in. Each one holds real traces of its own past and offers a different experience, built around the evidence uncovered during the long, meticulous restoration.

The Shipowner's Room, facing the old sea, welcomes guests with a freestanding bathtub and precious echoes of the Levant. From the entrance, the corridor introduces a recurring symbol, a guiding thread: an ancient wave that becomes an eye, an emblem of control over the sea and its trade. Beside it, refined oriental floral motifs speak of a culture known only to a few.

The Warehouse Room holds one of the most surprising discoveries of the restoration: inside the old chimney flue, manuscripts and fragments of English-language mercantile newspapers emerged, bearing witness to intense trade relations with the New World, as far as New York.

The Guardians' Room, instead, tells of the daily life of those who watched over the building's entrances. Here, during their breaks, the guardians played "tela", an old popular game, all while keeping watch over the entrance gate and the constant flow of people and goods.

The Harbour and Aqueduct Room faces the ancient paths of water and the medieval port. Exposed brick arches, walled-up windows and traces of the transformations that followed one another over the centuries tell a story of continuous adaptation, stratification and rebirth.

The Column Room is dominated by an ancient central stone column supporting four elegant cross vaults. On the walls, the original blocks of dark local stone, hand-worked by medieval master builders, are still legible — a tangible memory of the oldest Genoa.

Finally, the Cementine Tile Room holds one of the most precious details of the whole complex: a decorated terrazzo floor and original late-19th-century cementine tiles, recovered during the restoration works and repositioned in parts of the flooring as concrete evidence of the building's history.

The entire complex was designed and restored by Ing. Alessandro De Bastiani, following one precise principle: to preserve, before even considering replacement.

Every intervention was conceived to bring out what time had hidden. The absolute protagonist is lime, an ancient and noble material, used both in the plasterwork deliberately left exposed and in the finishes applied with the traditional technique of "calce schiacciata" (burnished lime render), capable of creating seamless surfaces reminiscent of the matte texture of unjointed stoneware.

Floors, walls and doors deliberately share the same neutral tone, creating essential, timeless spaces. It is the fabrics, the furnishings and the chromatic details — different in every room — that define the identity of each space and offer ever-new emotions.

Because in Genoa, restoring a building doesn't just mean recovering it.
It means listening to what the walls still have to tell.

These spaces, which for centuries welcomed people from every corner of the world, wish to keep doing so today, offering their guests not just a stay, but the experience of living the truest Genoa.
